Ear of wheat. This universal symbol of growth and fruitfulness takes on a deep, layered meaning within the Christian tradition:

• The Bread of Life: As the raw material for bread, the ear of wheat refers directly to Jesus Christ and the mystery of the Eucharist, in which He gives Himself to us as nourishment for the soul.


• Life from Death: A grain of wheat must fall into the earth and die in order to bear fruit. In this way, the ear of wheat reminds us of the suffering, death, and glorious resurrection of Christ, and of the promise of eternal life for us all.


• Spiritual Growth: The ear of wheat invites us to grow in faith and love in our own lives, so that we too may bear abundant fruit for the world around us.
